VIDEO: The Road to Becoming a Rockette

D

ancing on the Great Stage in the Christmas Spectacular has been a coveted role for generations of dancers. Although hundreds audition every year, only 80 dancers can call themselves Rockettes each holiday season.

But the road to becoming a Rockette isn’t just about auditioning; many hopefuls attend our Summer Intensive to train in our precision dance style and learn iconic Rockettes choreography. We also hold a special invitation-only week designed to give select students the opportunity to train at the highest level and further prepare for auditions. So when dancers Sophie, Camri and Katie were chosen to attend our 2018 Invitational Week, they were ecstatic!

Accepting the invitation is the easiest part, as the road to becoming a Rockette has only just begun for these three dancers. Learning three different numbers in six days is a daunting task for even the most experienced dancer, but it’s just a glimpse at how much hard work goes into training like a Rockette, nailing each move with precision and unity.

Despite the blisters and swollen feet, Sophie, Camri, and Katie continue to work hard, because getting one step closer to making their dreams come true is what makes the process worth it!

The final day of Invitational Week brings both nerves and excitement, as the dancers perform all of the routines they have learned for a room filled with family, friends and even a few of the Rockettes who trained them. All of their hard work throughout the week has been leading up to this pivotal moment, so the energy in the room is running high!

But a performance isn’t the only exciting moment of the day—one of these lucky dancers gets the surprise of a lifetime: an offer to be a Rockette in this year’s Christmas Spectacular!
