Rockettes’ Pick for Dancer of the Week: ‘Wonders on Wheels’
Who: The Wonders on Wheels dancers of Cincinnati, OH
Why we chose them: Time to break out the tissue box—this 4½ minute performance is sure to tug at your heartstrings!
At a dance competition at Seton High School in Cincinnati, OH, six dancers in wheelchairs twirl and glide across the floor alongside their “shadows” (14 volunteer dancers dressed in black) to Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.” These beautiful young ladies who range from 6 to 27 years old are part of the WOW (“Wonders on Wheels“) dance program at Sayler Park’s Revere Dance Studio. And to say they’re inspiring is an understatement.
“We unexpectedly lost one of our dancers back in September—it was actually the week we were starting back up, we were going to start back up the week she passed away,” Tracey Burgoon, owner and choreographer at the Revere Dance Studio tells Cincinnati’s WCPO. “Her favorite singer was Celine Dion, she loved ballet, so we decided to make this song a tribute to her.”
In addition to performing a beautiful piece in memory of their fellow dancer, the dancers themselves are enough to lift our spirits and remind us that, with dance, anything is possible.
Fun fact: Tracey and the Revere Dance Studio continue to offer their free “Wonders on Wheels” dance class each year (there is currently a waiting list of dancers who want to volunteer their time!), along with a class called “Kids on the Spectrum” for dancers on the Autism spectrum.
