Rockettes’ Pick for Dancer of the Week: Mom Overcomes Her Fear and Learns To Dance with Derek Hough

Who: Katie Bly of Santa Maria, California

Their dance:

Why we chose them: In the video she submitted to the TODAY Show’s “Summer of Yes” series, 32-year-old Katie Bly said simply: “I want to learn to dance.”

It’s what first popped into her head when she started thinking about things she had been too nervous to try—or simply had never gotten around to doing. And these days, she’s been making those things a top priority.

The mother of twin toddlers from Santa Maria, California, Bly is 32 years old—the same age her sister was when she was killed in a car accident in 2013. After suddenly losing not only her sister, but also her mother four years earlier to a rare appendix cancer, Bly says she wants to live every day of 32 and beyond to the fullest, since her sister didn’t get to.

And that’s how she found herself at the JustDance studio in L.A., taking swing dance lessons from one of the best in the biz (and our good friend), Derek Hough! Though she started off their lesson feeling reserved and unsure, she quickly picked up moves like the Pretzel, the Stop and Go, and the Egg. And the whole time with a smile and laughter, in honor of her late mother and sister.

Bly is living proof that it’s never too late to learn to dance, and to live each day to the fullest!

Fun fact: Bly is no stranger to physical activity; she often goes on ten-mile jogs while pushing her twins in their stroller!
