Rockettes’ Pick for Dancer of the Week: Keep Dancing Orlando
Who: Keep Dancing Orlando
Why we chose them: Dance excites. Dance thrills. Dance entertains. In Orlando, dance heals. And right now, healing is what Orlando needs as its citizens—and people around the country—still process the tragic news of the Pulse nightclub shooting. That’s where Keep Dancing Orlando comes in, a group created to honor the victims killed during the mass shooting through dance.
“Forty-nine beautiful souls were taken at Pulse, but their spirit dances on in all of us. Let’s cherish their memory and celebrate their lives by dancing in their honor. Let’s show the world that love conquers all—that joy and happiness can’t be stopped,” reads the campaign’s site. “Now more than ever before, Orlando is The City Beautiful. We will recover. We will grow stronger. We will keep dancing.”
The video that’s sweeping the Internet, set to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” shows people bringing joy to the city by dancing, well, everywhere! Parking lots, hair salons, soccer fields, well-known resorts and even construction sites become Orlando’s stages for honoring the victims and to raise awareness for the OneOrlando Fund.
So, why dance as a tribute? Everyone “speaks” it in their own way. Everyone understands it in their own way. It expresses the things we can’t say. We think that’s what makes it such a uniting force. That’s why we’ll always keep dancing.
Fun fact: Add your moves to the movement. Upload your own dancing video online tagged with #KeepDancingOrlando!
