Rockettes’ Pick for Dancer of the Week: High School Dance Team Performs ‘Wizard of Oz’ Routine at Pep Rally

Who: The PAC Dance Team of Walden Grove High School

Why we chose them: Need a last-minute group Halloween costume idea for you and your dance friends? Here’s one.

Look no further than the PAC Dance Team of Walden Grove High School in Arizona, who swept away their audience (and more than 2 million YouTube watchers) during their six-and-a-half-minute “Wizard of Oz”-themed performance at the school’s homecoming pep rally earlier this year.

We’re always amazed at the dedication and talent of high school dance teams, but these students go above and beyond—starting with fresh, fun and cohesive choreography. Not to mention, we also love the mash-up of songs from the classic 1939 film, mixed with hits from today that give a clever nod to each character (think: “Insane in the Brain” by Cypress Hill for the Scarecrow and Katy Perry’s “Roar” for the Cowardly Lion).

If that wasn’t enough, the set design set up in the school’s gym comes complete with Dorothy’s house, the Emerald City and the famed yellow brick road. But that’s not the only aesthetic details they incorporated: Check out the perfectly applied makeup of the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man (scroll to the second pic for Halloween makeup inspo!).

We have to give a major kudos to their coach and choreographer, Kristi Lopez, and all of these talented dancers, who, without a doubt, have amazing futures ahead of them!

Fun fact: Since the school’s opening only six years ago, the PAC Dance Team has won first place at the Arizona State Cheerleading/Pom Tournament three years in a row!
