Rockettes’ Pick for Dancer of the Week: Grandma Dottie
Who: Doris Lee Davis Pritchett (aka Grandma Dottie) from Danville, VA
Why we chose her: This video confirms a hunch we’ve always had: “Once a dancer, always a dancer.” Doris Lee Davis Pritchett, also known as Grandma Dottie, took advantage of a railing (or, as she saw it, a ballet barre) to practice a few graceful ballet moves while spending a short time at a rehabilitation facility recovering from pneumonia.
As you can tell, this wasn’t 89-year-old Dottie’s first time at the barre—she toured as a dancer with the USO in the 1940s, traveling to Japan, Guam and Hawaii to bring entertainment to the troops. These days, she’s keeping busy by teaching those who love to dance her signature 8-step routine called “DoinTheDottie.”
Grandma Dottie is a true inspiration!
Fun fact: Last year, Dottie published a book, “Life On A Magic Carpet,” where she shares her adventures as a young Southern girl in the 1940s in New York City and in the South Pacific on tour as a dancer with the USO.
