Rockettes’ Pick for Dancer of the Week: Father and Daughter Performing Epic Wedding Dance
Who: Mikalya Ellison Phillips and her father Nathan Ellison
Why we chose them: In place of the traditional father-daughter dance, 25-year-old Mikayla Ellison Phillips and her father Nathan surprised the 400 guests at her wedding reception with an epic choreographed dance!
During her reception, the typical dance started like many others—a sentimental slow dance to the wedding classic “Butterfly Kisses.” But that’s where the predictability ends.
Ten seconds into the video, the record scratches and the bride and her father bust out in an unexpected, joyful and high-energy choreographed performance to a mash-up of hits like M.C. Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This” and NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye”—mixed by her husband Cody.
“I’m the oldest and the only girl so that was my dad’s only chance to do something like this,” Mikayla tells ABC News. “He for years has talked about doing that and he finally convinced me.”
And, honestly, we can hardly tell who’s having more fun. Even with the stress of last-minute wedding preparations and finding time to practice every night the week before the wedding, it was totally worth it.
“The most fun thing was seeing my dad and how happy he was! I’m the oldest and the only girl so that was my dad’s only chance to do something like this.”
Fun fact: Mikayla is a trained dancer, and met her husband in Brigham Young University’s International Folk Dance Ensemble!
