Rockettes Pick for Dancer of the Week: Derek & Julianne Hough
Who: Derek & Julianne Hough
Why we chose them: Last night, the talented brother-sister duo danced (and sang!) their way across the stage of Radio City Music Hall for their sold-out MOVE LIVE ON TOUR—a cross between a “Broadway spectacular and the hippest, coolest dance party you’ve ever been to.”
And boy, was it a dance party!
With eclectic sets, costumes and a cast of talented dancers, Derek and Julianne headlined in solo, duet and group performances with dance styles ranging from ballroom and tap to salsa and hip-hop (and everything in-between!). We loved to see Derek tapping on the Great Stage again—joined by Julianne and their dancers, the feeling in the house was electric! Derek and Julianne shared stories of their childhood and dancing together in the living room when they were young, as well as how they are inspired by each other today. It was an amazing reminder that if you dream big and work hard, you can achieve anything.
Fun fact: Not only are Derek and Julianne brother and sister (he’s 30, she’s turning 27 at the end of July!), but both practiced the art of dance at a very young age. Coming from a family of dancers (all of their grandparents were dancers, and their parents met while on a ballroom dancing team in college!), Derek was sent to London to live and study dance, song, theatre and gymnastics with Corky and Shirley Ballas (yes, Derek’s BFF Mark Ballas’ parents!) at Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. A few months later, Julianne followed in Derek’s footsteps.
Another fun fact? Both Derek and Julianne made their acting debut in 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, where they appeared as a “Hogwarts school boy/girl.”
