Rockettes Pick for Dancer of the Week: Dancing Man!
Who: Sean O’Brien (aka the “Dancing Man”)
Why we chose him: This past February, Sean was body-shamed and cyberbullied for dancing in public. That’s when Cassandra Fairbanks, in collaboration with Dance Free Movement, decided to stand up for him and launch a Twitter campaign (#FindDancingMan) to find him and invite him to his very own dance party. It took only 24 hours for someone to find Sean—he was spotted in an airport in Ukraine by someone who had seen Fairbanks’ campaign. After accepting the invite (and a few months of planning and preparation), Sean, who is originally from Liverpool, England, finally got his dance party this past weekend at the Avalon nightclub in Los Angeles … and the man can dance!
And if that weren’t enough: Aside from being a star-studded event—Pharrell and Moby performed for the crowd!—the party raised tens and thousands of dollars for anti-bullying and positive-body-image charities. If you’re interested in getting involved, check out these great non-profits that are bringing awareness to bullying.
Fun fact: In order to respond to the invite, Sean had to create his first Twitter account. Within 48 hours, he had more than 80,000 followers!
