Rockettes’ Pick for Dancer of the Week: Britain’s Got Talent Contestant Jack Higgins
Who: Jack Higgins from Liverpool
Why we chose him: Jack Higgins, who recently auditioned for the judges on Britain’s Got Talent, knows that not all dance challenges are related to perfecting a pirouette or nailing that tricky choreography. Sometimes, it’s a challenge to let yourself dance at all.
When the 14-year-old Liverpool native began dancing nine years ago, he was reluctant to try ballet. But once he did, he knew it was for him—even if his peers wanted him to think otherwise.
“People called me names, ‘ballet’s for girls,’ ‘you should be doing football,'” he told the BGT judges. “I was getting really upset, but dancing, it just makes me feel happy.”
And then he proceeded to absolutely rock his powerful, jaw-dropping ballet routine to A Great Big World’s “Say Something”—breaking into tears (along with several audience members!) upon finishing. Jack, who is being compared to Billy Elliot, got a ‘yes’ from all four judges, and even received a touching message from Simon Cowell: “You know the one thing bullies don’t like, they don’t like it when you do well.”
Fun fact: It seems as though talent runs in the family! Jack’s 13-year-old cousin, Beau Dermott, is also a contestant on Britain’s Got Talent!
