Rockettes’ Pick for Dancer of the Week: Ballerinas Dancing En Pointe to Jason Derulo
Who: Ballerinas from the Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center
Why we chose them: What do you get when you combine the grace and strength of a ballerina with the poppy beats of Jason Derulo’s hit song, “If It Ain’t Love”? Exactly this.
These talented dancers of the Chicago Multi-Cultural Dance Center, ranging in ages from 12 to 16, completely SLAYED the choreography. Any ballerina will tell you that dancing en pointe is a challenge in itself—but these moves, in those shoes? They’re taking it to a whole new level.
Fun fact: The style of dance they’re executing has been dubbed “hiplet,” a fusion of hip-hop and ballet. Created by Homer Hans Bryant, the center’s artistic director, this video is a little taste of this new genre-bending style (they’ve also recently danced to Meghan Trainor’s hit single, “Me Too”).
