Rockettes Dance Moves: ‘Parade of the Wooden Soldiers’ Squad Revolve
Christmas Spectacular Number: “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers”
Dance Move: Squad Revolve
History: The iconic “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers” number in the Christmas Spectacular is a stunning display of precise choreography and has been a fan favorite since the show’s inception in 1933 (even the costumes have remained nearly unchanged!). We’re honored to carry on the legacy of this number, which so many women have performed as Rockettes for generations before us. Every year, dancers at the Rockettes Summer Intensive have the opportunity to learn some of this legendary choreography … like our Squad Revolve!
How-To: We begin lined up, feet together, hands at our sides. Then, with a precise head movement toward the center of the line, the squad begins to rotate. We often say it should feel like there is an iron rod connecting all of our shoulders. The squad needs to maintain a straight line and revolve exactly around a center axis, so each of us begin and end exactly on the same mark. Those of us on the outside of the squad need to move a lot faster than the two in the center. If any of us move even slightly off our numbers, we’ll crash into the squad next to us!
