VIDEO: Young Dancer Follows Her Dream of Becoming a Radio City Rockette
Every year, hundreds of dancers travel to Radio City Music Hall to audition for the chance to be a Rockette. Maile is one of them.
As an aspiring young dancer with a dream of making it on the Great Stage, Maile was ecstatic to make it through the first day of auditions back in April—but that’s not where the audition process ended, as she had to prepare for callbacks the next day.
Despite the audition jitters, Maile’s number one priority was remaining hopeful: “If I were to be a Rockette, I think that would be like my American dream come true,” Maile mused as she put her makeup on before callbacks. “How do I even describe that?”
Once Maile, and the other dancers who made it through to callbacks, returned to Radio City Music Hall, it was time for Julie Branam, Director and Choreographer of the Christmas Spectacular, to choose the dancers who stood out in the room and could potentially be a great addition to the iconic Rockettes line.
“When we are casting the Rockettes, we are looking for the people that have the most talent in the room, as far as technique goes, style of dance, picking up the information, a confidence about them, their willingness to learn.” Julie explained. “I really find that I learn a lot from that live audition and how they work in the room with 80 other women.”
Maile eventually had her 30 seconds to shine at callbacks and made it through the entire day, hopeful that she would soon get the call she was hoping for: “There’s no greater stage than Radio City for my family to see me dance in New York for the first time.”
Three months later at the Rockettes Summer Intensive, Maile got the news she had always dreamed of: She would be a Radio City Rockette in this year’s Christmas Spectacular!
