Behind the Spectacular: Improv Choreography During our “Rag Dolls” Number

E

very number in the Christmas Spectacular is unique and special in its own way. But there’s a certain section of our “Rag Dolls” number that remains the most unique of all: About halfway through the routine, there is a brief section where we halt our precision choreography and are given the freedom to improvise!

“We have four counts of eight to do any moves we choose to get our Rag Doll blocks and put them into position before we return to precision choreography,” explains Rockette Bailey C.

It’s such a fun moment to share with our Rockette sisters, and some days, we even like to pick a theme beforehand!

“Sometimes I’ll be like, ‘Everybody, can we do kangaroos now and pretend we’re from Australia?'” jokes Rockette Sophie H., who originally hails from down under.

It’s one of our favorite parts of the entire show, because the audience has no idea and it keeps us on our toes!
