Tony Awards 2017: Preparing for a Rockettes Performance

Our character shoes are buffed and bedazzled, our muscles are aching and our excitement is through the roof. We’re getting ready for an epic performance on the 71st annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall!

The Tony Awards are special for us Rockettes in that we get to connect with our friends in the theater community and support each other’s amazing achievements. Many of us came to New York City to see Broadway shows when we were younger, and those experiences stayed with us and inspired us to become professional dancers. Now, we are honored to be performing at Broadway’s biggest night alongside so many other talented performers.

Rehearsing for a televised performance is very different than rehearsing for a Rockettes production at Radio City. Before the Christmas Spectacular, we rehearse six hours a day, six days a week for nearly six weeks. For this year’s Tony Awards, we’re rehearsing for the six days leading up to the show—this includes learning new choreography and cleaning it, as well as working closely with the producers and blocking onstage to create the best possible performance for the television cameras.

For the first time since 2004, be sure to catch us performing on the Tony Awards at Radio City! Watch Sunday, June 11 at 8/7c on CBS or CBS All-Access. And follow all the action with us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat (Rockettes).
